We intend to bring the history to you and your children as often as we can manage, via events involving speakers and exhibitions plus the Dunchideock History Society's database accessed by Members only. There will be various events each year with speakers and sharing the exhibition with you as often as is feasible. Children's history activities too! |
RECENT EVENT Dunchideock History Society Visit to the Exeter and Teign Valley Railway (12 May 2024) Dunchideock History Society Visit to
the Exeter and Teign Valley Railway (12 May 2024) Our trip to the Exeter and Teign Valley Railway (EXTR) was a great success! A total of 15 Members and Guests had the most enjoyable, informative and fun filled experiential afternoon with the added pleasure of the sun shining throughout! The EXTR site is in the goods yard a short distance from the now closed Christow Station. Travelling on the restored Wickham Trolley and ‘Jenny Wren’ was most exciting and exhilarating! Colin Burges (owner and restorer) has an amazing collection of loco, rolling stock, railway equipment and railway paraphernalia that are rarely to be seen at other heritage railway centres. The Temporary Booking Office (TBO) contains an extensive local and general collection of the railway’s educational history including that of the local mines and quarries the line served. The DHS were honoured and delighted to receive a gift of an original Dunchideock Quarry Ltd sign from Colin. (Dunchideock resident Hilary Bond’s father, William (Bill) Addison, was manager at this quarry. Hilary remembers the quarry working well during her childhood – it closed shortly after World War II.). Colin provided a wonderful selection of cakes and tea. A big thank you to Colin for a splendid and inspiring afternoon - there was still so much we hadn’t had time to see! Also, within the TBO you will find the ‘Gift Shop’ – items can be found on-line too: https://www.teignrail.co.uk/gift-shop.php. We are happy to plan another group visit to the EXTR this summer – are you interested? contact: [email protected]. Exeter and Teign Valley Railway: https:// https://www.teignrail.co.uk/index.php |
